"Totally Awesome Computers Shutting Down"
March 3rd, 2006 @ 4:30pm
Keith McCord Reporting
Rumors have been circulating all day that Totally Awesome Computers is going to close its doors.
Here's what we know: A conference call was made to all eight stores this afternoon, informing the employees that the business was shutting down at 7 pm tonight.
In truth, they all shut down earlier this afternoon and a manager says employees were sent home.
On that conference call was the Vice President of Operations, Bruce Hacking and owner Dell Schanze. The exact reason the company is shutting down remains a mystery really.
A sign on the front of the State Street store in Salt Lake said "temporarily closed for inventory"; employees leaving the store just told us "no comment".
The manager of another store told us the original plan was to close down tomorrow, but when word started to circulate they decided to do it tonight. When contacted by KSL NewsRadio, Dell Schanze wouldn't confirm or deny the story.
This afternoon in Sandy, the folks at PC Laptops held a news conference, and said that company wants to help customers of Totally Awesome computers. Beginning Monday, PC Laptops will honor the labor service guarantees from Totally Awesome, for at least 90 days. PC Laptops also says it wants to hire 20-30 of Totally Awesome's employees.
A sign on one of the Totally Awesome stores says that if you have a computer at Totally Awesome, you can pick it up at the West Jordan store next Friday and Saturday.
There is a meeting for Totally Awesome's workers tonight at 7 pm. Hopefully more information will come out of that meeting and we will report it on Eyewitness News at 10.

I'll be sorry to see them go. I got really good service there, and the systems were good. Oh, well. Easy come, easy go, I guess.
